Tis the season, once again to be jolly with Christmas lights! Just ask the 2014 Guinness World Record holders for “Most Lights on a Residential Property”, the Gay family of LaGrangeville, NY.
Tim Gay, along with his wife, Grace, and three children, Emily, Daniel and John, illuminated 601,736 lights to beat the most recent Guinness record of 502,165 lights held by the Richards family of Australia. Tim Gay, an engineer had also held the record in 2012.
RITZ Crackers supplied a helping hand with their own holiday light addition made up of nearly 200,000 lights, creating a snowman made out of RITZ Crackers, to support the Gay family’s attempt to bring the World Record back to the United States.
The holiday light display, which covers two acres and takes roughly two months to build, is synchronized to more than 200 songs, including top-40 hits and traditional holiday favorites. Visitors can also tune their radios to 95.3 FM, a local radio station, to hear the music while they drive through the amazing light show.
“My family and I are thrilled to bring the Guinness World Record back to the United States and we’re even more excited that we did it with nearly 100,000 more lights than the previous record,” said Tim Gay.
“We had no plans to attempt the record this year until RITZ Crackers, a brand my family has loved for years, contacted us and offered their support to help us break the record. We couldn’t have done it without their help and contribution of nearly 200,000 lights.”
According to Guinness adjudicator Michale Empric, the 601,736 lights that adorn the Gay’s property and create a mammoth blinking and pulsating holiday circuit board, while conjuring up shooting stars, rainbows and bowls of sherbert, weren’t counted, but the receipts for all the lights were reviewed.
“You are officially amazing,” Empric said to Gay and his family after declaring them the new record holders.
Gay also works on the project with the Union Vale Fire Department, whose members collect donations from visitors admiring the display while passing through the driveway in vehicles.
The proceeds go to local charities that support services for domestic violence victims and children as well as a community fund established by the Fire Department.
Gay estimates the effort has raised $80,000 over three years and he expects to collect more than $30,000 by the time the display comes down Dec. 29.
“Not only do you bring happiness and cheer to people and inspire children, we’re helping people that need help,” Gay said.
