Your Phone is Bulging – What Now?

If you woke up this morning and noticed your phone is bulging – or another device – this article is for you. Perhaps you left it charging overnight, or dropped it and possibly damaged it yesterday.

If your phone or other device is getting fatter, this usually only means one thing. The battery is swelling inside and exerting pressure. Batteries are not supposed to bulge, and you should not overlook this!

Bulging Phones Need Urgent Attention

Bulging batteries do not fix themselves. They continue adding pressure and this can permanently damage your phone. If you can do this safely, remove the battery and put it in an open space outside. If you can’t, then put the phone in the open space outside instead, if this is safe.

You now should have the bulging battery where it can catch fire, and burn without causing further damage. Contact your emergency service and tell them your phone is bulging. They will know what to do next.

Please DO NOT try to sort the swelling out yourself, by pricking a hole in the battery to reduce the pressure. This will release the gas which is flammable and can even explode!

Secrets of Preventing Bulging Phones

Batteries bulge and swell when they enter out of specification situations. Here are five ways to help prevent this happening:

  • Never let a battery become hot. Keep it away from sunlight, ensure air can circulate, and give it a chance to rest.
  • If you pack a battery or device away or leave it in storage, make sure it is in a cool, dry ventilated place.
  • Only use the original charger and always check it for damage. You get what you pay for in the world of batteries!
  • Replace your batteries as soon as you notice they are draining fast. Ask the supplier to fit a new one for you.
  • Never leave your phone plugged in all the time. Running it on the battery helps it keep working properly.

This completes our two-part series on why your phone is bulging, what to do about it, and how to prevent it happening.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
