What to Do When a Phone Catches Fire

Having a phone battery catch alight can be alarming, to put it mildly. Especially when it is inside our favorite android or iphone device.  It could also be inside the pet robot dog or any one of a million other things lithium batteries power these days. We should know what to do before a phone battery catches fire – or a battery in any other device – before it happens.

Step One When a Phone Battery Catches Fire

Keep your cool when your phone battery catches alight. You are more important than your home or auto. We don’t want you being harmed. If the phone is in your pocket, remove the item of clothing. This is not the right time for modesty.

However, your robot pet dog, laptop, phone or other device is thankfully far more likely to catch fire while charging. Do not pick it up and throw it in the bath. Electricity, water and people can be a bad mix. The first thing you need do when a phone battery catches fire while charging is turn off the electric wall socket. If this is too near the fire turn off the main circuit breaker to the building instead. Now go outside. Lithium battery fires are dangerous.

Step Two: Worry About Your Health Next

Lithium battery fires emit toxic fumes. We believe energizer recommends firefighters wear breathing apparatus to ward off oxides of carbon, aluminum, lithium, copper, hydrogen fluoride, and cobalt.

Please don’t let heroics tempt you to go back into the room and try to extinguish the battery fire completely. When you turned off the power supply, the lithium battery already started cooling down. Phone your local fire department or emergency service when a phone battery catches fire. After all, you do have insurance but you still have to act responsibly and take care.
