We didn’t think one update on the SOLAR SPLASH 2018 competition was enough for the week so, we’re back with another one!
This isn’t new news per say as we’ve discussed it back in December so it serves as more of a reminder! And that reminder is that there is a new video award at the competition!

Reminder of NEW SOLAR SPLASH Video Award 2018
Every year, as part of the competition, the teams need to produce a written and visual display to describe their boat creation journey for the Solar Splash competition. As it is the 25th annual SOLAR SPLASH competition, THE board team is “thus offering the very first Solar Splash Video Award”. The teams are invited to share their journey in a video format! These videos should provide a short and exciting narrative about the team formation, the boat construction, water trials, or whatever the team feels best represents their efforts. There are no specific styles but these videos may include team member interviews, drone footage, stop motion techniques, candid moments, and live video of past events.
This is an optional award and it must be applied for. However, if you do create a video, you are encouraged to use it as part of your team’s visual display.
Video Guidelines:
If your team would like to apply for the video award then they must go by the following rules:
- The video must be between 1-4 minutes long;
- It must contain no profanity or inappropriate language;
- The video must have attributions to all materials used to avoid copyright infringement;
- Promoting your school and acknowledging your team’s sponsors is fine, but do not
make your video an advertisement; - Upload your video to YouTube and send the link to Solar Splash Headquarters at
hq@solarsplash.com. The video’s deadline is 5 pm Eastern Standard Time, Tuesday, May 29, 2018.

The “Innovation Award”
SOLAR SPLASH loves acknowledging the effort their teams put in for the competition and one way of doing that is by giving many design awards each year. The Innovation Award must be applied for as well. This award is not new, unlike the video one, and it is intended to reward the team with the most innovative development. Ask yourself this: Does your boat include a novel engineering creation? Including but not limited to: a new propeller design, a new hull design, the development of a new drive system, or special features on the solar module? Let SOLAR SPLASH know!
The only thing you need to do to apply is to write a 250 entry including the following things:
- Description of the advancement
- Why the advancement is valuable, including quantifiable metrics if possible
- Brief story of how the team first came to imagine this advancement or see a need for it
