Tesla Megapack Takes Storage to New Level

Battery storage is a critical factor in the rollout of green energy from the sun and wind. That’s because their consistency varies during the day. This can also fall away completely when clouds cover the sky and the wind drops abruptly. American company Tesla has contributed large battery farms using Powerpacks. On July 29, 2019 it introduced a larger version it refers to as the Tesla Megapack

The Tesla Megapack is Impressive and Cost-Effective

Elon Musk’s company says the Tesla Megapack can store up to 3 megawatt-hours of energy. Moreover, it can transform 1.5 megawatts of energy from DC to AC so the electricity can be used in homes. This represents 60% more capacity than the smaller Tesla Powerpack according to Science Alert.

We have grown accustomed to Tesla making mega claims and achieving them too. Therefore, we are already wondering what comes after Megapack because there seems no practical limit to the number of Tesla cells in a given space. Gigapack comes to mind although a gigawatt is a thousand times greater than a megawatt.

Setting Words Aside Bigger is Probably Better

The loss to the grid will be greater when a Tesla Megapack fails, compared to a smaller Tesla Powerpack. However, these Powerpacks are proving reliable as they save South Australia US$40 million annually according to Tesla. The company moreover claims it can install Megapacks faster than building a fossil-fuel power plant.

The alpha site will be a Pacific Gas and Electric Company installation in California. There, the new, larger batteries will provide power to the grid when demand exceeds its own capacity. It’s exciting to see battery storage transforming grid supply this way. This makes a pleasant change from the gas peaking stations that are gradually vanishing from the landscape.

About Author

Electricity has always intrigued me. I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
