Climate Strike But Youth Claim Their Posterity

I don’t often step out of the shadows on these pages. However, with seventy summers behind me I applaud the climate strike with every ounce of energy goodness gives me. Psychologists say we only plan as far as our personal horizons. I have often wondered why we entrust our future to people of my generation.

Greta Thunberg and the First Climate Strike

I was amazed when a Swedish girl bunked her ninth grade classes. A series of wildfires and heatwaves inspired her to follow the example of kids at a high school in Parkland, Florida. I believed they were following Benjamin Disraeli’s conviction that the youth of a nation are trustees of posterity.

Now posterity means all future generations that follow us as far as our imagination reaches. My own experience tells me this becomes harder to embrace as we approach the end of our days. I believe the climate strike that rippled around the globe is a sign our young people are seizing the baton my generation is preparing to lay down.

This Youth Movement Upholds the Scientific Truth

Science believes Earth is steering a course towards increasing warming. They have found irrefutable evidence human technology is causing this change.

However, many of the world’s leading politicians deny humans are the cause of the problem. This is spawning a number of populist movements that put self first. I hope our young people hang on to their dreams as they grow through this. I close with these thoughts Dylan Thomas penned.

“Do not go quietly into that night. Old age should burn and rave at the close of the day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” I am doing my best. You, our young people must do the rest. Your climate strike should be just the beginning of what you can achieve when you believe.

I tripped over a shrinking bank balance and fell into the writing gig unintentionally. This was after I escaped the corporate world and searched in vain for ways to become rich on the internet by doing nothing. Despite the fact that writing is no recipe for wealth, I rather enjoy it. I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
