New Delhi Television (NDT) shared breaking news about the pandemic in China on March 21, 2022. Their writer began by reviewing how the People’s Republic kept infection at bay with targeted lockdowns, mass testing and travel restrictions. However Omicron is proving more invincible this time, as China locks down more cities.
China Locks Down More Cities As Omicron Takes Hold
NDT explains the surge has broken through China’s defenses and “in recent months … taken hold in multiple cities”. Therefore, the world’s second largest economy is locking down Jilin, the second-biggest city in Jilin province tonight.
This means 4.5 million people living there will spend the next three days sheltering at home. They may only step outside to make essential purchases. This follows on 4,000 new infections yesterday, of which two-thirds were in Jilin province bordering Russia and North Korea.
Jilin’s capital and largest city Changchun AKA the ‘Detroit of China’ is under similar restraints. There, 9 million people have been in lockdown since March 11, 2022. They may only shop for food every two days. The only exceptions are medical personnel and other “anti-epidemic workers”.
People’s Republic Records Two Deaths from COVID-19
NCA confirms the first two COVID deaths since January 2021 occurred in mainland China two days ago. They both occurred in Jilin province. Both patients were males, one age 65 and the other 87.
They apparently had “a range of underlying health problems associated with advanced age”. China has a reputation for doing things thoroughly, not the least when it locks down communities. There are now “tens of millions in other regions” according to New Delhi Television.
Their article speaks of “authorities … scrambling to create hospital beds, fearing the outbreak could put the healthcare system under strain”. This includes eight temporary hospitals, and two quarantine centers in Jilin province alone.
