The Indian government rolled out the next phase of its electric mobility promotion program for business on March 13, 2024. This continues the pattern of promoting local industry and trade adoption, with encouragement for private purposes too. We append a link to the official announcement, and highlight the most important aspects therein.
E-Vehicles Benefiting from India’s Electric Mobility Promotion
The primary goal of the over-arching program is to promote, and further accelerate adoption of electric vehicles in India. Funds for the four-month period going forward from April 1, 2024 have a cap of 500 Crore Rupees. This amount converts to $U.S. 1 Billion as we understand it.
This phase of India’s electric mobility promotion applies to electric two-wheeler (e-2W) and three-wheeler (e-3W) vehicles with registration for commercial use. However, as mentioned there are also benefits for privately-owned or corporately-owned electric two-wheelers.
The broader goal is to accelerate the growth of India’s e-vehicle-manufacturing muscle, and speed the move to green mobility adoption. This makes a deal of sense, given the extent that two-and three-wheelers dominate India’s roads and cities.
More On the Ongoing Initiative to Promote E-Transport in India
The Indian nation has been the third-largest primary-energy consumer since 2013, after China and United States. It is also a leading oil-consumer after China. A third of its energy consumption is due to the use of petroleum products. This makes its transport sector a particularly attractive target for greener energy.
Some 98.5% of the 500 Crore Rupees allocated to the electric mobility promotion will comprise direct incentives.
- The initiative will subsidize 372,215 two-and three-wheel electric vehicles for 4 months.
- Some 90% of these will be 2-wheelers, with the balance rickshaws and 3-wheelers.
- However, the scheme will only apply to vehicles fitted with ‘advanced batteries’.
- But 4-wheelers and e-buses are excluded because they benefit from other programs.
We looked far and wide to find a reliable definition of ‘advanced batteries’ in this context. Finally we stumbled over a news item in Times of India that confirmed ‘advanced’ means a three-year warranty with after-sales service.
