Chinese automobile manufacturer NIO has clocked up its 50-millionth electric vehicle battery swap, according to CNEV POST. This makes battery exchange a viable alternative to fast charging for its clients. Moreover, the company claims to have saved its customers the equivalent of $2.85 billion in the process. We go down memory lane and recall events leading up to fifty million battery swaps.
Unique Business Model Behind Fifty Million Battery Swaps
NIO is a Chinese multinational automobile maker with headquarters in Shanghai, and specializing in designing and developing electric vehicles. The company formed in 2014 with the avowed intention of challenging TESLA’s top-end sports cars.
Both companies experimented with battery swapping. The American company saw no profit in it. However, NIO did, and embarked on a eight-year strategy to test the alternative.
It began cautiously, but by 2023 NIO had more than 2,300 battery-swapping stations serving customers globally. This number included 30 outlets in Europe, according to KNOWLEDGE INSTEAD.
NIO set out from the beginning to be different and better. It installed a tailor-made chassis modification, allowing it to remove and replace its battery packs within one minute. Others have done something similar, so what was the NIO difference?
The NIO Discriminator Was How They Went About It
The Chinese automobile manufacturer did not stop with the purpose-built modification. NIO took a holistic view of the customer experience, and made it seamless throughout:
- The driver remains in their vehicle, while attendants move it to a service point.
- Then they swap the battery out within three minutes, while billing the owner.
- The driver then starts the motor, and drives away after enjoying a seamless service.
The vehicle owner saves money by not paying for the vehicle battery, which is a third of the new electric vehicle price. Instead, they sign up for a subscription service for battery swaps.
Owners choose from different packages, depending on how often they plan to swap batteries. NIO is responsible for inspecting and maintaining the batteries. That’s how they completed fifty million battery swaps and counting, and we are impressed.
