3000 Cycle Sodium Battery Shows Promise

Sodium-ion batteries employ sodium ions as their charge carriers. Their cathodes are traditionally prussian blue derivatives, teamed with porous carbon for their anodes. Sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries are similar beyond that, although the former compare badly in terms of cycle stability. Researchers at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) may have resolved this, with a novel 3000 cycle sodium battery.

Towards a Fast-Charging 3000 Cycle Sodium Battery

JNCASR is an autonomous institute of the Ministry of Science and Technology of India, that released the breaking news on June 23, 2025. The  ministry announcement revealed that the researchers used NASICON-type anode material.

NASICON is the short form for a sodium (Na) super-ionic conductor, which is a group of solids. Its primary function is acting as the solid electrolyte in sodium-ion batteries, which use earth-abundant materials.

In this instance, the prototype battery charged up to 80% in just six minutes, and lasted over three thousand charge cycles. This 3000 cycle sodium battery sounds like a great solution to the sluggish charging and short lifespans, that have hamstrung these batteries previously.

Not a New Material. What Made the Difference This Time?

The team at Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research north of Bangalore, India, found a creative way to use chemistry and nanotechnology together.

  • First, they reduced the NASICON particles to microscopic nano scale, and wrapped the new anode material in a carbon coat.
  • Then they added a small amount of aluminum. This combination allowed the ions to move faster and more safely.
  • These tweaks resolved the slow speed and cycle instability in their laboratory, but will they work in practice?

Will 3000 Cycle Sodium Batteries Work in The Real World?

What works in a laboratory may not be robust enough for the real world. The Ministry of Science and Technology of India announcement concedes that more development is necessary.

None the less, the Ministry says, the sodium-ion technology has passed several hi-tech tests already, ‘including electrochemical cycling and quantum simulations’. Sodium is cheap and abundantly available in India. Time will tell whether this 3000 cycle sodium battery lives up to its promises.

About Author

Electricity has always intrigued me. I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
