Dog Chews Heated Skiing Glove

Some skiing gloves contain rechargeable batteries. These power electric heating elements that keep skiers’ hands warm. These cells are most likely to be lithium-ion batteries, that fit more energy into a smaller space. If a dog chews a heated skiing glove, we guess that would be the end of the glove. But it could also be the start of a house fire …

Active Fire Alarm After Dog Chews Heated Glove

The Ottawa Fire Department received an emergency call from a fire alarm monitoring service at just after nine the other morning.  The dog that chewed the lithium-ion battery is fine, although the family had to find another place to stay for a while.

There was a flurry of activity as the Ottawa Fire Department sprung into action. The alarm came from a two-story, single family home, in what realtors describe as an excellent, slower-paced neighborhood.

Meanwhile, the smoke alarm-monitoring company had also alerted the home owners, who was rushing back as fast as they could. This was after they logged into their interior security cameras, and saw an active fire inside their house.

At that stage, we expect the dog that chewed the heated skiing glove was laying low with an ‘I did not do it’ look on its face. We hope it found a safe spot away from the smoke, and was okay as the drama unfolded.

Smoke From Skiing Glove Fire Visible Outside House

As the Ottawa Fire Department rushed to the scene, motorists driving past began logging 9-1-1 emergency calls. Firefighters arrived within four minutes, and saw heavy smoke pouring out of a first-story bay window.

They forced entry through the front door in a classic fast attack, rolling out a fire hose behind them as they extinguished the flames. Meanwhile, one team member located the dog, and carried it to safety outside the house.

Ten minutes later the fire was under control. When a dog chews a heated skiing glove you never know what happens next. In this instance, the family and their dog had to find another place to stay that night.
