Do I Need Batteries For My Solar?

We could purchase the electricity for our home from a local utility, or we could generate it ourselves. In the latter instance, we would probably use solar panels to capture energy from the sun during daytime.  If you are wondering, do I need batteries for my solar system, we’ll do our best to answer your questions.

Generating Solar Electricity Without Batteries

Solar panels generate direct current electricity for as long as they receive sunshine. Once we convert this to alternating current by using an inverter, we could use the energy ourselves around our home. Although we could also supply that electricity to the utility (if it wanted it).

Whether you need batteries for your solar system very much depends on your lifestyle. If you are retired or working at home, then you may prefer to consume your solar energy yourself, and reduce your electricity bill in daytime. If either of these options applies to you, then you may not need solar batteries.

When You May Need Solar Batteries

Batteries could add a new dimension to your lifestyle, by allowing you to store the energy for another, later use. You could, for example:

  • Store the energy during daytime, and sell it to the utility when peak rates apply.
  • Use the electricity yourself during utility peak demand periods, saving money.
  • Keep the batteries topped up, so you have an electricity answer to blackouts.

So Do You Need Battery Storage or Not?

The correct answer depends on your particular lifestyle, and whether batteries make good financial sense. Several thousand dollars could repay themselves with savings on your electricity bills, but this takes time.

But there’s also the quiet satisfaction of knowing you are making a difference to your personal carbon footprint by ‘going green’. We hope we answered your questions, or at least helped you decide whether you need solar batteries or not.
