A Garnet of a Battery Leap Forward

Garnet gemstones are a group of silicate minerals with a famous pedigree. First, their ruby glow attracted jewelers. Then woodworkers began applying a final finish to bare wood with garnet paper because it is ultra fine. Moreover they also feature in sand blasting and water jet cutting. Now practical solid-state batteries with garnet-based electrolytes have arrived.

Samsung’s Galaxies and Boeing’s Dreamliners delivered a sober reminder to the industry when some batteries proved unsafe. It follows that replacing liquid electrolyte in lithium ion batteries is part of the solution. Garnet-type electrolyte is solid and non-flammable too.

Thus, it is relatively safe and stable. In fact, it could already be in regular use but for one catch. The obstacle has always been the high impedance of the electrolyte. Because of this, it obstructs the flow of current between the lithium electrodes. A team of scientists at the  University of Maryland Energy Research Center solved this. Their answer is as elegant as it is simple. Sandwich a bridge between the two.

The team inserted ultra-thin aluminum sheets between the electrolyte and the lithium electrodes since they needed a bridge. As a result, they reduced impedance by 300-times. Because of this, far speedier discharging and recharging of the battery became possible.

“This is a revolutionary advancement in the field of solid-state batteries,” they commented in Nature Materials.

Their discovery has a bearing on lithium metal to solid electrolyte technology generally. By substituting sulfur electrodes for lithium ones we could deliver hitherto unknown levels of density. Hence exciting times lie ahead for battery technology. And it is our privilege to witness them.

Far-Reaching Implications for the Green Industry

This discovery has exciting possibilities. Because battery density and free-flowing delivery have been major impediments in the search for affordable electric vehicles. Moreover they have also been an obstacle for solar solutions in large communities. Now a simple aluminum bridge between lithium electrodes and garnet electrolyte appears to be the breakthrough that we need.
