Gasoline vehicles have an advantage over electric ones, in the sense their fuel is scalable and there are a variety of brands. Electric ones, on the other hand use purpose-built, bespoke battery packs in particular shapes and sizes. This is great for their makers in terms of annuity income. But what happens if you can’t get an EV battery for your trusty pair of wheels anymore?
Are Chevy Spark EV Owners Facing This Dilemma Now?
The Chevy Spark city car has been in production in South Korea since 1998. Sales have been falling steadily during the past five years particularly. Wikipedia confirms Chevrolet plans to discontinue the Spark in North America after the 2022 model year. Production of United States and Canada’s least expensive electric car will therefore come to an end in Korea soon.
The Verge website published a thought-provoking report on April 24, 2022. Their headline reads “GM reportedly stops providing battery pack replacements for the Chevy Spark EV”. The article cited a GM district executive saying his company was “no longer going to supply that battery”. We understand the battery warranty is eight-years / 100,000-miles.
What Happens Next If You Can’t Get an EV Battery?
We’ll step aside from the debate concerning the practical reasons for this decision. That’s because we are more interested in the overarching question of the lifespan of electric vehicles generally. It doesn’t make sense to trash a perfectly good vehicle just because the battery is worn out.
Therefore we pose the question, what happens if you can’t get an EV battery for your old faithful. Other vehicle owners could soon start asking the same question, as they compare benefits of gasoline versus electric energy.
We hope somebody enters this potentially lucrative after-market soon. We hope for the sake of the industry scalable EV after-batteries are feasible. However, we suspect this may not be as practical as we hope.
