Daniel Payne chose a title that shocked, when he penned his hard-hitting article for Politico on August 14, 2022. That’s because he believes thousands of Long COVID patients with lingering infections are pressuring their governments to do more. But these could only be the tip of the iceberg of millions of suffering people worldwide. Are we leaving Long COVID patients to rot?
Leaving Forgotten LONG COVID Patients to Rot
New research suggests hundreds of millions of people are still suffering from Long COVID according to Daniel Payne. There could be severe economic and healthcare implications down the line from patients unable to function normally, or work. Yet Daniel Payne feels national and international responses have ignored the situation.
Some 90 known Long COVID groups have formed to highlight the need. “But we are just left to rot,” claims founder and president of Long Covid Switzerland, Chantal Brit. “That’s why all those organizations are popping up. There is no official help.” Can it be true we are leaving Long COVID patients to rot? How bad is the situation really?
Could The Situation Affect a Quarter of Infections?
The author of the article in Politico believes the factor could be as high as 30%. This is not something that regularly makes the headlines. There are no proven treatments to even slow it down. However, the syndrome may attract more attention as we realize the implications.
The United States Government has apparently already invested more than $1 billion to better understand the disease, the article continues. However, many other governments almost seem to deliberately ignore the reality that is Long COVID. And so we begin to glimpse the frustrations the special interest groups experience.
Daniel Payne describes a range of symptoms afflicted people face. They include extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, diarrhea and heart palpitations. Yet many don’t even receive acknowledgement from their governments. “I don’t even think it’s even being discussed” says one Long COVID advocate in Kenya, who formed a support group.
