Winter is around the corner, if falling leaves and West Michigan Television are to be believed. They reminded us on November 11, 2019 that wintry conditions mean driving through ice and snow up their way. At times like that we don’t need auto battery trouble, or tire failure for that matter.

Winter auto problems can sneak up on us, says Mike Corfman, director of emergency management for Kalamazoo County. Take your vehicle to someone who knows what they are doing, he says. Make sure everything is working as it should.

Tires are the first critical thing to check. They should not be down to minimum tread, and must hold full pressure without regular pumping. People usually get stuck in winter because their tires and tread are wearing out, says Mike Corfman. He recommends fitting snow tires for winter, and ensuring you do not have auto battery trouble either.

Cold Winter Weather Brings New Energy Challenges

Open the hood and check the connections are spotlessly clean. You may have a problem if they have white crust on them. This could signal auto battery trouble around the corner. Ask an auto electrician to check the starter battery is charging properly.

If not, replace it before winter bites and prices rise. Mike Corfman recommends confirming there is sufficient anti-freeze in the system. Keep the gas tank over half full throughout winter, he adds. If you are caught in gridlock or trapped in snow your heater will keep you warm as long as the engine runs. However, crack all windows slightly open for ventilation, and recharge your phone before it runs flat.

Finally, the man from Kalamazoo County stresses the need for emergency gear. Sure you have a first aid kit in the glove box. But do you have a shovel, a blanket, and a flashlight with fresh batteries too, he asks?
