Infirmity is a state of not being physically or mentally strong, especially through age or illness. Those who are old or infirm have always been more susceptible to draining disease. Data from CDC filtering through media including CNN Health suggests breakthrough COVID targets infirm elders, confirming this pattern. However, having complete vaccination largely negates this risk.
COVID-19 Vaccinations Are Protecting Those Who Have Them
Hospital wards and intensive care units are crowded with COVID patients of all ages who DID NOT vaccinate. That’s perfectly logical, since scientists developed our vaccines to prevent this. If we did not have this medication, then our medical facilities could be swamped to overflowing. We could have people with COVID dying in their homes. Think about that for a moment.
However, the vaccines are not 100% perfect. No medication is, or anything else we can think of in this life. Respiratory diseases that spread through the air between unprotected people do find a way past antibodies occasionally. And as we might expect, breakthrough COVID does target infirm seniors.
How Breakthrough COVID Targets Infirm Seniors
Current data from CDC as reported by CNN Health reveals the following:
1… Voluntary reports from U.S. states logged 12,908 severe breakthrough cases of Covid-19 among fully vaccinated people that resulted in hospitalization or death.
2… 173 million U.S. people have full vaccinations. Therefore this represents a 1 in 13,000 chance of experiencing a severe breakthrough case of Covid-19.
3… Around 70% of breakthrough cases resulting in hospitalization were among adults 65 and older. These accounted for 87% of breakthrough deaths.
However, in defense of vaccination perhaps we should add fully vaccinated people only contribute 4% of U.S. COVID hospitalizations.
Having the protection offered by Pfizer and Moderna vaccine is a voluntary thing. However, responsibilities do go hand-in-hand with decisions. These obligations could therefore include remaining a distance from infirm people of all ages, in order to keep the window of infection closed.
