The seasons come, and the seasons go. Were it not for seasonal sales in shops, we might hardly mark the official dates. Batteries come and go on a similar basis. One moment our wearables are working, the next moment they go flat. This may not be the end of the world, but other applications really matter. Take smoke alarm batteries, for example. When last did you change yours? We should do this annually.
Perhaps Changing to Daylight Saving Time is a Good Excuse
The idea is spreading like a wildfire on the media. We thought it was a good idea to add to the clarion call. The change does not affect all of us of course, but the idea is valid for everyone. Create a routine. Pick a memorable date, and call it smoke alarm batteries day. This works, whether the batteries are alkaline, lithium, carbon zinc, or another type.
How the Smoke Alarms in Our Homes Work

There are several different types of domestic smoke alarms. These include detectors that ionize the air to detect smoke, and others that use photoelectric cells to check for light intensity.
Finally, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide ones look for gas in the atmosphere.
When a smoke detector finds signs of a fire, it either informs an alarm system, or emits an independent alarm, or both. Most receive their power from mains electricity, with rechargeable or disposable battery backup depending on the design.
What Firefighters Say About Smoke Alarm Batteries

Firefighters ask us to mount them high up on walls, at least 6 to 12 inches from the ceiling in all bedrooms and passage ways. They appreciate this means we need a ladder to change the batteries. However, this is where smoke accumulates first. They suggest we test the batteries regularly, say on payday or the first day of the month. Smoke alarms usually ‘chirp’ when their batteries are going flat. It’s as simple as that.
Finally, it’s important to keep smoke alarm vents clear, so they can ‘sniff’ the first signs of a fire immediately, and notify us promptly. When vacuuming, remember to reach up with the pipe and suck the lint out. Finally, never paint over a smoke alarm and keep it clear at all times.
