If you’re thinking the coronavirus is a walk in the park, you may like to think again. COVID could leave you feeling exhausted and tired according to people who had it. No less a person than Queen Elizabeth of England says ‘It does leave one very tired and exhausted, doesn’t it? This horrible pandemic. It’s not a nice result,’ and she’s not one to complain.

The Queen made that remark at the virtual official opening of the Queen Elizabeth Unit at Royal London Hospital. She was chatting with patients after they built the facility in 5 weeks after the height of the pandemic.

One Asef Hussain told her his brother died, and then his father after they all caught the disease. He was struggling to catch breath his so badly in December 2020 his wife called emergency services 999. ‘I remember waking up one morning and just finding it really, really difficult to breathe,’ he explained.

‘I remember waking my wife saying that I feel like there’s no oxygen in the room. I recall me sticking my head out the window, just trying to breathe, trying to get that extra oxygen.’ After being on a ventilator for 7 weeks, he only recently stopped using a wheelchair.

We Held Their Hands and We Wiped Their Tears

There’s ample evidence COVID leaves health workers feeling exhausted and desperate for a break. Senior sister Mireia Lopez Rey Ferrer told Queen Elizabeth ‘As nurses we made sure patients were not alone.

‘It felt at times that we were running a marathon with no finish line as we wiped their tears and comforted them.’ COVID is not a walk in the park. We have a duty to do everything we can to avoid becoming a burden on the healthcare system.
