News Medical and Life Scientists posted a review relating to serious neurological symptoms among hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Their article, dated May 9, 2022 used data from the VIRUS COVID-19 Registry to illustrate their point. However, the bottom line is one 8th of patients have neurological symptoms in COVID-19 hospital wards that are serious. We suspected this for a while, but now we have evidence to back up our concerns.
Neurological Symptoms One 8th of Patients Display?
Serious neurological symptoms may result from damage to the brain, spinal column or peripheral nerves according to UK NHS. Some may be life threatening, while many other mental effects “severely affect an individual’s quality of life”.
A study appearing in Critical Care Explorations journal of April 2022 unpacked the evidence in VIRUS COVID-19 Registry. This suggests the disease may cause dysfunction throughout the body, including the nervous system even in moderately acute cases. And these symptoms may also persist during the Long COVID phase.
Drilling Down Into the Evidence for These Claims
Research Electronic Data Capture employs a secure, web-based system to collect anonymized data for VIRUS COVID-19 Registry. The report in Critical Care Explorations journal analyzes its COVID hospitalized patient data between March 25, 2020, and March 9, 2021. Moreover, all the patients in the sample had polymerase chain reaction tests confirming COVID within 21 days of admission to hospital.
The study focused on 16,225 patients from the 65,850-strong database whose outcomes were recorded. Among them, 2,092 had severe neurological symptoms, but 1,840 were diagnosed at time of admission.
1… 414 patients in this group had a stroke, a seizure, or meningitis / encephalitis.
2… Stroke was present in 331 patients, seizures in 243, and meningitis / encephalitis in 73.
However, the trend was strongest in older patients continuing the age-related theme. Therefore News Medical and Life Scientists notes an urgent need to understand the underlying risk factors with a view to prevention.
