The Washington Post opened with an worrisome article on August 25, 2022. In it, veteran journalist Taylor Lorenz broke news Twitter flagged genuine information about COVID-19. And even went so far as to suspend accounts of doctors, scientists, and patient advocates. Did Twitter iron out the truth about COVID dangers too?

Yes, Twitter Did Iron Out the Truth About COVID Risks

Twitter acknowledged the error promptly by removing the labels, and restoring the accounts. Although this only applied to queries concerning 10 specific tweets, and accounts according to Washington Post.

‘We’re always working to improve the safety of our service,’ Twitter spokesperson Celeste Carswell assured Taylor Lorenz. ‘And ensuring we provide avenues of recourse when we get it wrong, through our appeals processes.

‘We acknowledge the mistakes made in these cases. And we are reviewing our team’s protocol to safeguard against such mistakes in the future. We appreciate the community’s feedback. We remain focused on reducing harm and providing informative content across Twitter.’

However, the veteran journalist believes the incidents may have ‘shaken many scientific and medical professionals’. That’s because they regarded Twitter as a key way to publicize the continuing risk of COVID.  To carry the message to a population that has grown weary of more than two years of shifting claims about the disease.

How Widespread Could This Problem Be?

The Washington Post article cites concerned PhD oral pathologist Johanna Po in this regard. Two of her posts had temporary Twitter flags against them. We understand Po believes, and we quote ‘It’s happened to quite a number of medical people and people in bio research.

‘In terms of public perception, it puts into question our credibility as scientists,’ she continues. ‘If we put something on Twitter like a research study, and you say it’s wrong, it invalidates everything we are saying.’ Food for thought, indeed.
