The storm that lashed Australia’s east coast north of Brisbane, has triggered numerous tales of ‘true blue’ resourcefulness. In case you weren’t aware of it, that term means unwaveringly loyal, or faithful. Help sometimes comes in unexpected forms in a crisis. We share the unusual tale of how an EV battery helped prepare baby formula while a hurricane raged.
EV Battery Helps a Young Family Keep Going
Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred struck Queensland, and northern New South Wales, Australia on February 20, 2025. Climate experts ascribe this presence so far south to climate change, and warn this trend may continue.
The Guardian news channel reports how a young couple, with a nine-month-old daughter and a three-year-old son, lost power in their north Brisbane home during the storm. They wondered how on earth they were going to sterilize bottles, and boil water for baby formula.
Then, for the first time, they saw their electric car in a new light. They wondered if they could use its power-to-load system to boil water, but they knew very little about this. Then they took a leap of faith.
We are delighted to relate how electricity from the EV battery helped prepare the baby’s food, by heating water to sterilize bottles and boil water. Although this was quite a quantum leap for the young couple.
How the Unprepared Couple Weathered the Storm
The couple knew that the power-to-load system on their electric vehicle could power an appliance in their home. But what they did not know, was what else it could do at the same time, and how to hook it up to their home.
Necessity is the mother of invention in times like these. The young mother with a nine-month-old daughter and a three-year-old son, ran extension cables throughout the house.
Then she hooked up a fridge, kettle, toaster, phone chargers, laptop charger and lamp into her network, plugged the other end into the power-to-load socket, and turned on the lamp. They had light and more, and a happy baby too!
