Forces of Climate Change Denial Upon Us

Scientists warn that climate change is truly upon us. They do so dispassionately, because they have a duty to be objective. To their minds, the truth should speak for itself. However, the forces of climate change denial have no such compunction. They oppose the truth for their own, parochial purposes. When we allow them to change our minds this way, we surrender our birthright, our habitat Earth.

Two Upfront Forces of Climate Change Denial

False science is gradually backing off, because it has failed to convince 75% of Americans according to Science Alert. It has changed its angle of attack, and is now saying reducing CO2 emissions will have little effect.

False economists, on the other hand would like us to believe climate change is too expensive to fix. Not fixing it means we continue spending six times that amount propping up the fossil fuel industry. This includes subsidized supply costs, tax breaks, deteriorating health, and the destruction of our habitat.

Three More Subtle Angles of Attack

The forces of climate change denial would like us to believe a warmer Earth will produce abundant food and a better life for everyone. They overlook 11,000 people died in the 2010 Moscow heatwave.  They overlook the fact Earth’s resources are not infinitely elastic.

Some western politicians are delaying corrective action until the developing world does so first. In so doing, they ignore two fundamental facts. These are 25% of human-induced greenhouse gases come from the United States, and 22% from the European Union. China, Russia, Africa and India generate 13%, 7%, 5% and 3% respectively.

However, the most selfish strategy is perhaps pretending that warming is simply not happening. When we believe that, the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world have taken away our birth right.

I tripped over a shrinking bank balance and fell into the writing gig unintentionally. This was after I escaped the corporate world and searched in vain for ways to become rich on the internet by doing nothing. Despite the fact that writing is no recipe for wealth, I rather enjoy it. I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
