Education minister Lorenzo Fioramonti announced Italian students will study climate change from 2020 onward in every grade. He represents the Five Star Movement, which is a new-right party with a strong environmentalist position. This will make Italy the first country to implement the policy. However, Italian schools will teach climate change as part of civics, not as a separate curriculum.
Italian Schools Will Teach Climate Change 33 Hours a Year
The Italian coalition government wants to position their county as a world leader in environmental education. Therefore, lessons will have an ‘environmentalist footprint’ focusing on issues linked to climate change according to CNN World News.
However, Italian schools will be teaching climate change to prepare students for a looming ‘climate emergency’. Sustainable development will therefore receive attention during geography, math, and physics lessons. We hope Italian schoolchildren engage their parents with their new knowledge regarding global warming and extreme weather. After all, they will take the knock for baby boomers over carbon emissions leading to increasing warming
Climate Change and Sustainability at the Heart of School
“I want ours to be the first education system that puts the environment and society at the core of everything we learn in school,” Lorenzo Fioramonti says. A panel of scientific experts will help his ministry redevelop the national curriculum accordingly.
Italy will be the world’s first to have national education in that sense, the minister’s spokesperson Vincenzo Cramarossa, told CNN. His boss already has a fiery reputation for defending students protesting climate. And supporting taxes on sugary drinks and plastic. Italian politics have been in turmoil for decades. We hope Lorenzo Fioramonti’s insistence that Italian schools teach climate change succeeds.
That’s because our youth will be the first generation to feel the full force of global warming. Therefore, it is only right and proper we prepare them for what lies ahead.
