However, lead-acid batteries’ role in data centers depends on the service level required. Uptime Institute therefore recommends the following hierarchy:
1… First, backup power to the computer installation.
2… Then the above plus building services and cooling.
3… Plus any component can fail without interruption.
4… No known fault can interrupt data center functioning.
Lead-acid batteries can make a core contribution by supplying uninterruptible power when the mains power supply fails. One could almost say they are at the heart of our vast digital society.
