How to Make a Magnet From a Nail

Magnetism is all around us. We find it in ferro magnetic rocks containing iron.We can also create magnetism using electricity. This allows us to generate electricity with wind and solar, charge batteries, and drive electric cars. Today we are going to build our own electro magnet using electricity from a battery. Electro magnets are essential components in generators, motors, relays, loudspeakers, hard discs, and more.

Please Gather These Materials and Tools

First, we need a pair of scissors (remember to ask mum first), and a small piece of sandpaper. These are our tools, now for the magnet materials. We need a three-inch steel nail, some thin, coated copper wire, one AA battery for energy, and some staples. Finally, we need some electrical tape to keep things together.

Now We Can Build Our Electro Mini Magnet!

First, tightly wrap twelve inches of coated copper wire twenty times around the nail without overlapping the turns. Aim to have approximately the same length of spare wire at either end. Next, wrap the sandpaper around one end, and gently remove one inch of insulation. When done, make a small loop at the tip of the wire.

Repeat the process at the other end of the wire on the far side of the winding. Then set the sandpaper aside. Next, attach the looped ends of the electric wire to the battery terminals using the electrical tape. You can also use clips if you have them. Your magnet is now live and ready to test. Please remember the nail will eventually get hot.

Are You Ready to Have Some Electro Magnetic Fun

Sprinkle a few staples on your worktable. After you bring the nail close to them, you should be able to pick them up. If you try to pick up a paper clip, your magnet may not be strong enough. Try increasing the number of windings until you can. Congratulations! You just made a magnet. Please remember to disconnect the battery.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
