Perform a Simple Aluminum-Air Battery Experiment

An Aluminum-Air battery is a single-use storage device. It manufactures electricity by allowing air to interact with an aluminum sheet via a separator,  so only the ions exchange. Yesterday, we wrote about a complex version developed by the U.S. Government. Today, we want to share a simple aluminum-air battery experiment so you can make your own.  It should be able to generate 1 volt / 100 milliamps

Things You Need for Your Aluminum-Air Battery Experiment

Raw Materials

  • Tap water, kitchen salt, and mixing bowl
  • Sheet of kitchen foil say one foot long
  • Double sheet of kitchen paper towel
  • Pack of activated charcoal for aquariums

Tools and Equipment

  • Pair of electrical leads with bulldog clips
  • Meter capable of detecting one volt and one amp
  • Simple DC device running on a motor

Procedure for Assembling Your Aluminum-Air Battery

First, pour two cups of water in the mixing bowl. Next, gradually stir in salt until a small, undissolved amount appears at the bottom of the bowl. Now smooth the kitchen foil out on a convenient water-resistant worktop. Then fold the paper towel double, lay it over the foil, and moisten it with the salt-water solution

Pour activated charcoal onto the soaked kitchen towel until the layer is approximately a half-inch thick. Take care not to allow any charcoal to spread over the edges and touch the foil because this will spoil the experiment.

Next, place one end of the first electrical lead on top of the activated charcoal. Then clip one end of the second lead to the kitchen foil. Finally, fold the foil over to create a ‘sandwich’. Take care to ensure the two leads are in position and there is no charcoal touching the foil. This completes your aluminum-air battery.

How to Check Your Aluminum-Air Battery Experiment is Working

Connect the meter, or the DC motor to the other ends of the two leads. You may get a slight reaction. Gently press down on the ‘sandwich’ to make more electricity. The battery should be capable of producing as much as 1 volt / 100 milliamps. If necessary, start the motor spinning with your finger.
