By now it seems an acknowledged fact that our weather will become more extreme as climate warms further. Therefore, it seems logical storms of unprecedented ferocity will roar down hurricane alley. Or that a massive storm surge will flood a coastal city. Either event could collapse the electricity grid, and plunge millions into darkness for weeks. Thus planning for a black sky event is a sensible thing to do.
What Survivalists Recommend when Planning for a Black Sky
Engineers call long power cuts black sky events, and these are becoming more common in the United States and Canada. They also happen from time to time in Africa and South America where planning for a black sky is a pipe dream.
South Australia has experienced several grid failures, although in most cases they only lasted a few days. However, what happens if the power is off for several weeks. What will people without renewable energy storage do when there is no more fuel for their generators? When the gas station pumps stop working, the remaining food in the stores is rotten, and public transport comes to a shuddering halt?
This Could Be Like Going Back Into the Dark Ages
So says John Heltzel from Emergency All-Sector Response Transnational (EIS) referring to when Venezuela ran out of water too. The internet and auto tellers also failed. The only money was what people had squirrelled away.
Planning for a black sky is something to think about because we may not be able to rely on the National Guard for help. John Heltzel suggests two-week’s worth of water, non-perishable food we don’t have to cook and remembering pets. A good supply of plastic bags will suffice for garbage and personal needs.
We could bury these in the garden for as long as we needed, and then dispose of them responsibly later. However, is this really necessary? Could this happen in North America, or is our imagination playing tricks?
