Recharging Lithium-ion Batteries in Apartments

Lithium-ion batteries have high energy density, packed into relatively small spaces. This gives them potential to generate intense heat if they malfunction, heat that can spread like a runaway fire. Recharging lithium-ion batteries in apartments thus carries a small element of risk. If this potential materializes, it can generate a fire that is difficult to extinguish.

Risk of Recharging L-Ion Batteries is Statistically Low

The probability of a particular lithium-ion battery malfunctioning is extremely small, given the large number of these batteries in circulation. In fact, this should not happen at all, provided the battery is correctly designed, manufactured, and used.

Several recent battery fires in Republic of South Korea apartments, re-emphasize the risk of recharging lithium-ion batteries in enclosed spaces. Various news channels emphasize the importance of doing so only when you are present, and can monitor the situation.

The Danger Increases in High Rise Apartments

Recent incidents around the globe once again prove the statistical risk of recharging lithium-ion batteries in enclosed spaces. Mobility devices including electric bicycles and scooters, seem particularly prone, perhaps because of the large number in circulation.

Residents living in high rise apartments may face situations where charging these vehicles outdoors, is impractical. Unfortunately, some occupants charge their devices indoors while sleeping, or absent at the time. If a lithium-ion battery overcharges, they may be unaware of this.

The South Korean National Fire Agency reports over 600 such incidents during the past five years. Nine out of ten of these fires involved two-wheel-vehicle batteries. Some of these batteries will inevitably have been purchased on the internet, where third-party vendors may disclaim personal responsibility.

Lithium-ion batteries should not overcharge and enter high-heat thermal runaway, if they are correctly manufactured and used wisely. Always purchase your batteries from trustworthy suppliers, and follow operating instructions carefully. Avoid recharging lithium-ion batteries while asleep, so you can monitor them on an ongoing basis.
