All lead acid batteries have lead plate electrodes, and a dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. It can be quite confusing to decide whether we need a flooded, absorbent glass mat, or gel type. We describe the differences, weaknesses, and strengths of each kind. This knowledge should help you decide the right lead-acid battery for your application.
Three Lead-Acid Batteries but Which One is Right?
Flooded Lead Batteries for Starters
Wet cell, or flooded lead-acid batteries comprise lead plates submerged in a liquid, sulfuric-acid solution. This traditional design is still common in cars, motorcycles, and trucks, where they start their engines and take care of their other electrical circuits.
Flooded lead-acid batteries require regular maintenance, including adding distilled water to their electrolyte. This is a cost-effective solution able to withstand a variety of climates.
Are Valve-Regulated Lead Batteries the Right Choice?
VRLA, or valve-regulated lead-acid batteries could be the right choice, if you want a more maintenance-free product. That’s because some of these are sealed, meaning you don’t have to top up the electrolyte. There are actually two varieties. Read on if you need the right lead-acid battery that you can largely ignore.
ABSORBENT GLASS MAT AGM BATTERIES
AGM batteries have a fiber-glass mesh containing their sulfuric-acid-solution electrolyte. They deliver good service in backup power systems, alarm systems, emergency lighting, and also as starting batteries:
- They require periodic functional testing and cleaning, but function well in high-vibration and shock environments.
- They also have superior deep cycling ability, making them a good possibility if you need repeated deep discharges.
ARE GEL LEAD-ACID BATTERIES RIGHT FOR YOU?
Gel lead acid batteries could be right for you, if you need maintenance-free deep recycling, with a gel electrolyte that does not need to be level. They may not be able to start combustion motors, but they can power golf carts, electric wheelchairs, UPS systems, home renewable energy, and so much more, for longer.
Lead-acid batteries may not compete with lithium-ion for brute power. But their electrolyte cannot catch fire the way lithium-ion does, because it is three-quarters water. They could be your choice for dependable, stable power that you can recharge with confidence. Over to you!
