Storage Batteries On The Ocean Blue

Storage batteries are everywhere from probes in outer space, to submersibles in deep ocean trenches. Elegant yachts cruise the oceans between these two extremes.  We decided it was time to extend the conversation to storage batteries on the ocean, powering deep sea yachts. So let’s step aboard one, and see what we can find.

Storage Batteries Are Key to Blue Water Cruises

Yachting World confirms that electricity on board is a key issue for all blue water cruisers. This need extends from comfortable onboard sailing, to transatlantic races they say. The magazine surveyed 234 skippers, to learn how they generated and used their electricity at sea.

The information that Yachting World obtained, confirmed that reliable, quality batteries are key to marine navigation systems. Particular care is essential if migrating to lithium technology though.

Extra protection may be necessary to prevent over-charging, leading to battery over-heating. We have heard that some insurance companies require that a certified person completes the lithium-ion battery installation. Storage batteries burning out on the ocean present a challenge, that no skipper could wish to contemplate.

Batteries on the Ocean Need Deep Recharging

Deep-sea sailing boat batteries require seven-to-nine hours charging every day, to carry them through the night. The renewable energy to achieve this usually comes from the sun or the wind. There is little room for error on a small boat far out at sea.

For this reason, skippers often invest in monitoring systems to watch over their key electrical equipment, and storage batteries too. Some larger sailing yacht owners may invest in diesel generators, although the majority prefer renewables.

We imagine that when you’re sailing the ocean on a balmy day, the silence of batteries and renewables is better than any noxious diesel. What an opportunity to listen to the roaring silence of the universe above, knowing your batteries are doing their work.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
