The dangers of lithium-ion batteries are statistically minimal, when we view them in the context of how many there are. Yet the fact remains that the fires they cause are damaging property, injuring people, and even killing a few. Health Canada published an advisory notice alerting citizens to these perils, and we link to it below.
Consumer Speaks Out About Lithium-Ion Batteries
We try our best to advise people how to avoid lithium-ion battery fires in this blog. The other day a consumer added their voice to the debate on Pelham Today. They asked a leading question that caught our attention, and we believe deserves comment.
“Why are a majority of our citizens being kept in ignorance,” they asked. “About the very real and hazardous nature of lithium-ion batteries when they fail?” We provide a link to their letter to the editor at the end of this article, so you can judge for yourself.
Do We Accept the Danger Because of The Benefits?
There’s a risk attached to most consumer products, if we don’t use them wisely. Here we think of air, road, and rail transport as examples. Most of us know the the dangers of lithium-ion batteries. Although we push these to the back of our minds as we do every time we board an airplane.
The author of the letter to the editor accepts that lithium-ion batteries (all batteries in fact) contribute to green energy. However, they are deeply concerned about “electric school buses spontaneously combusting” and electric scooters catching fire in “almost epidemic proportions”.
Yet, the author continues, “the safety issues regarding lithium-ion batteries self-combusting or exploding appear to be more or less shrugged off”. They seem to feel that our government is not doing enough to alert citizens to these risks.
We could reduce the dangers of lithium-ion batteries, if we purchase less powerful alternatives. Our customers choose our lead-acid batteries on that basis, and they cost less too. They come back to us time and time again, and we thank them for their loyalty.
