World Health Organization reported global COVID cases may be leveling out on Monday August 23, 2021. However before we get too excited, the previous week still saw 4.5 million cases, and ‘only 68,000′ new deaths. But these were still 3% more than the week before. Hence World Health Organization’s warning this is not the moment to drop our guard could be sound advice.
A Plateau or a Lull Before The Next Surge?
Global cases leveled out a few months earlier in May 2021. However, since Delta hit the headlines the trend went the opposite way. United States’ new cases rose 15% the previous week to 1.02 million. But Iran, India, United Kingdom and Brazil were all chasing at its heels. This suggests this is not the moment to drop our guard.
The Americas and Western Pacific reported 8% and 20% increases overall. While many other regions declined slightly, or held level. Could this be an indication world nations at are at different points in their surge cycles. Or is this a measure of the spread of the Delta?
If It Is Delta This Is Not the Moment to Drop Our Guard
The Australian Delta outbreak is behind the increase in the Western Pacific, according to CNN News. Near-neighbor New Zealand is also struggling to keep a cap on a mini spread.
Both nations are showing signs of adapting their COVID-19 strategies. That’s because the talk is more about living with the virus, and less about eradicating it now. The Australian prime minister is also shifting from reporting new cases, to monitoring trends among the seriously ill.
Meanwhile, the New Zealand response minister across the Tasman Sea is also questioning the feasibility of eliminating the coronavirus. World Health Organization recommends increasing vaccination rates, while maintaining public health and social measures.
