Three Homes Burn in a Lithium-Ion Fire

The New York Mayor, and the Fire Department of New York have confirmed that lithium-ion batteries were behind a June 22, 2025 incident. That was when a blaze ripped through three Bronx homes, leaving multiple people with injuries. Several of these victims were firefighters. When another three homes burn in a lithium-ion battery fire, we have to ask how many more must we endure?

Intense Damage from Fierce Lithium-Ion Fire

The video from the FDNY news conference is quite long, although we include it below in case you have time to view it. The fire began outside one of three homes, where five lithium-ion ‘devices’ were standing, of which two were recharging.

At least one of the five batteries involved did not have safety certification. “It was a traumatizing experience, not only to the residents of all three houses”, the Mayor said. “But also for the neighbors on the block.”

Twelve first responders and two residents had minor injuries. A further firefighter inhaled smoke and was taken to hospital for intubation. We are delighted to report that the official is recovering well.

New York had managed to avoid a critical injury like this, so far this year. We guess that what happened was inevitable, in a situation where three homes burn in a lithium-ion fire of such magnitude.

More About The Three-Home Lithium Fire

The fire broke out in an old part of the Bronx in New York, where there is little space between free-standing homes. The blaze began in the downstairs porch of a 115-year-old, wood frame building. From there it spread rapidly though the ground floor, first floor, second floor, and attic space.

As the fire spread, it jumped across to the buildings on either side as well. Fortunately, the first responders had arrived by then. They began their aggressive attack with multiple fire hoses, and brought the situation under control. We salute them for their dedication.
