After two successful years of competing, the University of New Mexico solar boat team is back and ready to take on the 2018 Solar Splash competition!
What is the UNM Solar Boat Team?

The team is composed of 9 mechanical engineering senior students: Left to right: Daniel Taylor, Chris Murtagh, Ray Reyes, Elisabeth Keller, Luis Hernandez, Ally Jackman, Kevin McConnell, Erich Brown, and Keith Soules. They are directed by UNM’s very own professor Dr. Peter Vorobieff. The team is also New Mexico’s AND UNM’s third time entering the Solar Splash competition.
UNM in 2016-2017
The University of New Mexico Solar Boat came into creation in 2016 and it came in 4th place in the 2016 competition! The team also scored 3 other awards: Rookie team with highest score, Sportsmanship award, and Second place at the Solar Slalom. The boat they used was provided by Gheene Manufacturing Inc. out of Titusville, Florida. Their boat was the Aluminum Tracker 14 foot Jon Boat and its make up was of fiberglass.

At the 2017 competition, the team qualified in second place overall, second place in Visual Presentation and won the outstanding solar system design award. I believe they might be on their way to the top this year again…
We cannot wait to find out more of their plans for this year’s competition! Stay tuned on our website for more updates about the team!
