During the two years we followed the pandemic, Long COVID emerged from the shadows to become a real-life phenomenon. It appears to affect a relatively small number of people, at least to a noticeable extent. However, the number of incidences increases as total infections stack up. We spend a few moments unpacking the symptoms of Long COVID because we believe it’s important to know them.

Most people who catch COVID recover fully after a few weeks. However, Mayo Clinic explains some people, even those with mild symptoms find these last for a long time. Medical scientists have several terms for this enduring condition, including:

  • Post-COVID-19 syndrome
  • Post-COVID conditions
  • Long COVID-19
  • Long-haul COVID-19
  • Post-acute sequelae (PASC)

The Post-COVID syndrome, to use that name involves a variety of new, returning or ongoing symptoms. Patients may experience them for more than four weeks. In fact, in extreme cases they may last months, or even years resulting in disability.

There’s evidence from research that 1 in 5 people aged 18 to 64 has at least one medical condition that might be due to COVID-19. These can appear between 1 month and I year after the original infection.

Moreover, 1 in 4 people aged over 65 will have at least one medical condition that might be due to COVID-19. ABC.Net advises the following are most likely to appear in patient reports:

  • Extreme tiredness still there after sleep
  • Shortness of breath, heart palpitations
  • Chest pain or chest tightness
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Changes to taste and smell
  • Problems with memory and concentration

Children are not immune to Post-COVID syndrome either, although it is less likely than with adults. The outward signs may be fever, runny nose, or cough. Young kids can also be off their food, or listless and lethargic. They may also have headaches, or occasionally lose their taste and smell.
