World Health Organization suggested we are in a position to end the pandemic on September 14, 2022, according to Fortune Magazine. They believe that’s because pandemic deaths are at their lowest ebb since March 2020. The Lancet COVID-19 Commission was of similar mind that same day, when it listed three main areas to concentrate on. Could this be the turning point we have been waiting for?
Why We Are in a Position to End the Pandemic Now
“The world has never been in a better position to end the pandemic,” Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus told a press briefing. Although the head of World Health Organization did admit “We are not there yet, but the end is in sight.” That’s because global new COVID cases fell by a third last week, compared to the previous week.
Moreover, confirmed cases reduced in all six World Health Organization regions, including the Americas, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa. Deaths also fell by 22% week-on-week. Therefore, “We can see the finish line,” Ghebreyesus announced. “We’re in a winning position, but now is the worst time to stop running.”
The Lancet COVID-19 Commission’s Three Priorities
The Lancet COVID-19 Commission’s report focuses on lessons for the future of COVID-19. And its comprehensive investigation, analysis, and response includes these three priorities it believes the world should focus on now:
- Firstly, take practical steps to finally control and understand the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Secondly, make realistic, feasible, and necessary investments to strengthen the first line of defense against emerging infectious agents in countries, by strengthening health systems and widening universal health coverage.
- And thirdly, develop ambitious proposals to ignite a renaissance in multi-lateralism. Integrate the global response to the risk of future pandemics. Implement actions to address the climate crisis, and reversals in sustainable development too.

Millions of preventable deaths followed widespread failures during the COVID-19 pandemic, at multiple levels worldwide. And a reversal in progress towards sustainable development for many countries too, The Lancet believes. We sincerely hope these ambitious proposals will help turn the tide, and we can get the world back on track again.
