Did a Giant Battery Fly Into Our Solar System to Stay

If a battery is either a store of energy, or the materials that go into it then Comet 2015 BZ509 may meet the spec. Although it has been waiting for 4.5 billion years for us to find it. Nobody knows where it came from to enter Jupiter’s orbit, and where it may go next. “That’s what we need to figure out,” Dr Fathi Namouni from the Universite Cote d’Azur told BBC News. Studies by NASA suggest we could classify it as a giant battery, at a pinch.

Could We Retrieve Giant Battery Materials from Comet 2015 BZ509

NASA thinks we could do so through a combination of robotics and 3-D printing manufacture. It says, “A fully functioning, remote system of robotic excavators and simple machinery is still years away from reality. However, the building blocks appear to be in place.”

After the building blocks became reality, we could mine minerals that are rare on Earth. These might include refined materials, rare metals, and even energy. Yes energy for giant battery projects. Because we can tap vast resources of carbon, and a billion times more platinum in the asteroid belt than on Earth. Some of it might be orbiting right here:

News Update Regarding Comet 2015 BZ509

‘BZ’, as scientists affectionately call the asteroid entered our consciousness on 26 November 2014. They noticed it, because it is in retrograde orbit, moving around the Sun in the opposite direction to the planets.

It arrived when our Solar System was still forming and the Planets were not where they were now. So it’s a ‘little more tricky’ to figure out where it came from,” Dr Fathi Namouni admits. “We can work back and constrain the position of the different planets … but it’s going to be difficult,”

NASA is searching for a suitable asteroid for an alpha test. Astronauts could visit it as early as 2021, and bring back samples of minerals it hopes. We can scarcely believe we are alive in these times. What else is out there beyond Comet 2015 BZ509, we wonder?
