The United Nations secretary general issued a stern warning on May 9, 2019. The world faces catastrophic disaster and must “dramatically change the way it fuels factories, vehicles and homes”. For if it does not, then we face future warming to a level that may be nearly impossible to survive.
Change Before World Faces Catastrophic Disaster Situation
Secretary general António Guterres told Time Magazine that world leaders need to work much harder if they want to halt the creeping warming. “The world has to change, not in small incremental ways but in big transformative ways,” he insists. These must lead it into a green economy with electric vehicles and clean cities.
The secretary general is summoning world leaders to New York in September 2019. He will tell them to stop subsidizing fossil fuels. Burning coal, oil and gas triggers warming by releasing heat-trapping gases even while the world faces catastrophic disaster. He wants to put a stop to building new coal plants after 2020. Moreover he wants to see carbon tax become reality.
Why You Have to Hang On to That Goal
António Guterres Says “Net Zero Greenhouse Gas by 2025,” Please
Generations of denialists have watched global temperatures rise 1.8 degrees (1 degree Celsius) since the Industrial Revolution began. We must put no more excess greenhouse gases into the air by 2050. This will stabilize the situation and then we can start lowering temperatures again.
Scientists are questioning whether this is possible under current political will. “If you don’t hang on to that goal, you’ll achieve a total disaster,” the secretary-general responded to Time Magazine. His hopes rest on the youth realizing that warming is a dramatic threat to the whole of humankind. “So the worse it gets, the more people will demand change,” he reasons.
Is he a ‘prophet in the wilderness crying repent,’ or a visionary with a dream? António Guterres has said “We need to make people understand that this is not sustainable”. We live in hope he succeeds in moving mountains of resistance.
