Fast Battery Charging Methods Surprise Everyone

It’s great seeing the battery research we report on gradually coming through to retail. However, ultra fast charging has eluded us until now because it shortens battery life. German power tool manufacturer C. & E. Fein GmbH’s announcement of a new fast battery charging method could change this. They say their Fein ALG 80 can charge from “zero to 80 percent in 38 minutes”. We had to know more!

A Fast Battery Charging Method ‘In Half the Time’

The method chosen by C. & E. Fein GmbH uses the novel approach of charging to 80% capacity “within 38 minutes”. At this stage it is using “the constant current constant voltage (CCCV) charging method. After that, their fast battery charging method changes to a different mode.

At 80% of full charge the C. & E. Fein GmbH charger reduces the rate to a lower level to top up the remaining 20%. The German power tool manufacturer says this is done at a slower speed “in order to protect the life of the battery”. This could transform the market for “a whole range of end-uses from smart-phones to electric vehicles” reports Electro Pages. However this does not get us to the goal of charging EV’s in minutes.

Canadian Start-Up Thinks That’s Not Good Enough

GBatteries Energy claims it can “pump half a charge, equivalent to 119 miles of range into a Chevrolet Bolt EV battery in 5 minutes.” And then charge it fully “In double that time”. In this instance it uses pulsed charging technology though. That’s because those bursts of power are too short to overheat the battery.

Meanwhile on June 12, 2019 Israeli company Storedot announced it charged a scooter battery “in just five minutes”. It applied its fast battery charging technique to a Torrot scooter with a lithium-ion battery. However, “super-fast charging for electric cars likely won’t come onto the market until 2023,” StoreDot’s CEO told CNBC.Com news.
