Sharing the limelight with hybrid cars are electric cars. An electric car is another innovation carefully improved to protect the environment against harmful substances emitted by conventional vehicles.
Electric cars are powered by electricity through motors and series of batteries. According to tests done with electric cars, a well-charged battery can be used for up to 50 miles. This is not usually limiting, as an average person who owns a vehicle does not drive more than 40 miles a day. New advances are being made everyday to extend battery power.
Three major parts make the electric car work: the motor, the controller and the batteries. The controller acquires power from the batteries and delivers it to the motor. The accelerator pedal is connected with the potentiometer which provides the information to the controller as to how much power is needed by the motor.
Some might think that electric cars are too expensive when compared with gasoline-powered vehicles. However, based on North Carolina’s electric and gasoline costs, you can save as much as 50% if you use an electric car.
Batteries are typically replaced every 3 years, depending on what type of battery was incorporated in the electric car and how often it is used. Battery replacement may be a little bit expensive as it could cost as much as $2000. This is quite the primary problem electric cars have; however, manufacturers continue to seek a more cost-efficient battery. Innovations in the Li-ion battery are the primary focus of research (polymer li-ion, li-air, and others).
The Benefits of Electric Cars
- Eco-friendly. It does not emit any harmful gases, in contrast with conventional vehicles.
- Charging may be done at home, and several businesses and government bodies construct a charging station for electric cars in the workplace.
- It does not create too much noise when used.
- Easier to assemble because of its uncomplicated and few parts.
- Cheaper maintenance cost.
- Tax credits and rebates from the government as you are contributing to a greener environment.
Because of the soaring prices of gasoline, many seek alternatives and a good option could be using electric cars. Hopefully, manufacturers find ways to improve it so as to resolve some disadvantages that may be encountered when using an electric vehicle.
