Six Hundred Mile Range on LMFP Battery

News on the street is that China-based battery maker Gotion High-Tech is making strides with a revolutionary new battery. Energy Mix cites a report suggesting this will have a one-thousand kilometer / six hundred mile range between charges. That being the case, it would support a similar driving distance between top-ups, compared to the more frugal gasoline cars.

More Driving Freedom with Six Hundred Mile Range

Gotion High-Tech intends starting mass production of its new lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) batteries by 2024. They say that their claimed six hundred mile range will translate to a potential battery lifespan of 2.5 million miles, according to The Independent news channel.

We understand that this achievement is the culmination of more than 10 years of research at Gotion High-Tech. Lithium manganese iron phosphate batteries have previously seemed unsuitable for electric vehicles, for the following reasons:

  • Size and efficiency problems due to low connectivity and compaction density.
  • The tendency of manganese in the batteries to dissolve at high temperatures.

However, Gotion High-Tech claims to have reduced these impacts by almost halving the number of ‘structural parts’. This has slashed the amount of wiring required for batteries by some two-thirds, they say.

Gotion Announces Mega Factory in United States

The China-based battery manufacturer has announced plans to build a US$2.3-billion, six hundred mile range battery factory in the United States. This is in line with government plans to increase U.S. strategic independence. But will there be sufficient take up in the market to really make a difference?

Electric vehicle sales are booming in India, and Southeast Asia according to Bloomberg. However, sales of combustion vehicles are also growing year-on-year in these two regions.

It could be too early to predict when fossil will begin to retire from the market. Meanwhile, the uptake of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles has been disappointingly slow, despite the steady growth in global warming.
