Make a Photovoltaic Cell with a Diode

Diodes are two-terminal, asymmetric electronic components. They conduct current in one direction, owing to their differential resistance.  We often find them in rectifiers where they convert alternating current to direct current. Light-emitting versions have also become indispensable in electric lighting. Today we explain how to make a photovoltaic cell from a diode with a black body.

How Photovoltaic Cells Make Electricity

Photovoltaic cells are electronic devices that convert the natural energy in light into electricity by the photovoltaic effect, which is a physical phenomenon. They are therefore essential in our search for renewable energy that can counter global warming.

How to Make a Photovoltaic Cell at Home

You will need the following materials to complete this project:

  • Black-body diode common in old electronics.
  • Small pair of accurate, precision pliers.
  • Digital multi-meter with a micro-amp setting

The Naked Scientists recommend we begin by delicately breaking the black plastic away from the metal body of the diode. Start at one end they say, and remove it carefully until you begin to notice a lump. Repeat the process from the other end. Finally delicately remove the remainder of the plastic from the diode to fully expose it.

How to Test Your Modified Diode

Your diode previously had a black plastic shield surrounding it, which kept light away. Of course you have changed that now, but how will it react to sunlight? Set your multi-meter to detect micro-amps, and connect it to the diode terminals. Move your work from full sunlight to deep shadow, and back again. Notice how the multi-meter reading varies.

If the reading is higher in sunlight, then you have successfully made a photovoltaic cell, and you can demonstrate it to your friends. However, your solar cell is not sufficiently powerful to make solar panels unless you have millions of them. None the less, you have demonstrated how diodes convert sunlight to electricity using a natural physical process. And you did not have to change anything, or add any chemicals either!
