Electric Vehicle Battery Future Muddled

Internal combustion energy has had over a century to evolve. Most motorists have a basic understanding how their gasoline engines work, and the role their starter batteries play. However, their e-vehicle counterparts face an  uncertain electric vehicle battery future, in terms of trade-in value, battery life, and ongoing dealer support.

Unpacking the Uncertain Future of Electric Vehicle Batteries

This confusion does not encourage early electric-vehicle-adopters to take the plunge, and cross over to greener energy. Heartlander news channel is concerned that battery longevity, warranty, and resale value issues may affect purchasing decisions.

The point at issue here is that electric vehicle batteries may be the most expensive auto component. In fact, they may contribute half the cost of a vehicle. This uncertain electric vehicle battery future could have potential owners questioning whether electric cars are smart investments.

What Are the Factors Contributing to This Uncertainty?

The electric vehicle industry is asking consumers to purchase e-vehicles ‘in a leap of faith’, Heartlander continues. Customers have little assurance, it says, regarding future support after 8-to-10-year new vehicle battery warranties expire. Replacement batteries may cost between $5,000 and $15,000 upwards, at the time of writing.

Does an electric vehicle have any residual value, if a new battery costs more than its trade-in value, we may rightfully wonder? Other than the scrap value of its used components, of course. The deciding factor behind this dilemma will be the actual cost of the replacement battery when the day arrives, if indeed one is still available.

How Then Will This Potential Impasse Resolve?

Heartlander suggests that battery refurbishing could resolve the currently cloudy electric vehicle battery future. It points to a number of third-party refurbishers chasing what seems set to become a lucrative sector. Meanwhile, California is taking proactive steps to encourage longer-lasting batteries.

The relatively young electric vehicle industry lacks statistically reliable data to predict how much batteries will actually cost on the day. Meanwhile, manufacturers’ battery-saving suggestions may reduce driving range to 60% of user expectations. Perhaps policy-makers need to step in, and take steps to buttress consumer confidence.
