Batteries contain chemical reactions between active materials that are relatively rare. If our demand for more batteries continues to grow exponentially, then there’s a chance we might run out of these materials. Sure, scientists are searching for alternatives, but we are not in that space yet.
That is why it is so important to hand over spent batteries at recycling points, especially lithium-ion ones. If we throw them in the trashcan instead, then mechanical crushers could smash them , and hurt people trying to recover their raw materials.

It matters for the sake of the safety of other people, but also battery makers so they can reuse spent battery materials.
