Power-to-weight energy density is a critical factor for drones, and indeed all other types of aircraft. Operators need to achieve the longest flight range, while keeping the battery weight and dimensions as low as possible. Several customers asked us which battery should I use in my drone? What follows is a summary of the advice we shared.
Are Lithium-ion Batteries The Best Drone Choice?
Conventional lithium-ion batteries are the industry standard for drones, according to the Drone Life website. However, this chemistry pegs drone flying range to between 20 and 50 minutes. Moreover, cargo weight and weather conditions can reduce this capability further.
Drone users are frustrated by the knock-on effects of short drone battery life. They are seeking solutions that simplify flight planning, and reduce the frequency of battery swap outs. Operators of large-scale commercial operations are particularly taking the strain.
Two Diverging Battery Technologies For Drone Operators
Lithium-Ion Chemistry – The Good and The Bad
Lithium-ion batteries are an established chemistry offering fairly high energy density, and fast recharging. The battery industry is familiar with this technology, and produces billions of lithium-ion batteries annually.
However, this battery chemistry has a distinct downside too. Lithium-ion batteries recharge a limited number of times, before they start losing endurance. They don’t cope well with extreme temperatures, and are also potentially unstable.
Does Solid State Offer a Better Future for Drones?
That lithium-ion battery track record of occasional fires may be driving those customers wondering, which battery should I use in my drone? Drones are expensive. Even minor damage can ground them, perhaps permanently.
Emerging solid-state batteries hint at energy densities of over 400 watts per kilogram. This technology should therefore enable drones to fly longer and carry more cargo.
However, this chemistry is too immature for us to recommend as the battery you should use in your drone. The perfect battery that does all things for all people does not exist. Every purchase is a compromise.
