Australian Big Batteries Outsmarted Gas

Australian big batteries outsmarted gas, and chalked up a new record with consumers hardly noticing. This remarkable achievement happened in October 2025, when Australian utilities produced more electricity from renewables than fossil fuels, for the first time. This was a major energy milestone on the journey to green energy.

How Australian Big Batteries Outsmarted Gas

The stats were impressive. Total renewable electricity in October 2025 amounted to 9.88 terawatt hours, just beating fossil fuels’ 9.82 terawatt hours.  Three critical factors made this achievement possible, according to Reuters:

  • The new record came on the back of clean-power output growing 77% over the previous five years.
  • While simultaneously, Australia’s dependence on fossil fuels shrunk by 15% compared to the previous period.
  • Australia also had sufficient big storage batteries to accommodate the huge amount of green energy.

Battery Storage Helped Renewables Upstage Gas

Australian electricity grids are clearly going through a dramatic reformation. The Conversation confirms 90% of new generating capacity has been wind and solar, since 2015. But this break through is also thanks to utilities being able to store renewable energy for use during peaks, and after dark.

Bulk energy storage batteries are the silent partners in Australia’s giant energy transformation. They are putting natural gas on the back foot, and steadily taking over its role as a key peaking resource. The evidence is clear to see. Australian big batteries outsmarted gas, and they are taking the lead!

As the renewable energy / battery partnership matures, grid operators may increasingly favor this combination over natural gas. Their interest lies in saving money for their customers. Although they are equally importantly making a valuable contribution to the green economy too.
