Things are happening fast in the project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in United Kingdom. Back in August 2025, Great Western Railway was trialing a modified Class 230 suburban metro train. It had just completed a non-stop 200-mile journey on a single battery charge. Now we hear that this same vehicle has become first UK battery-power train in service!
More About The First UK Battery-Power Train
The train with a battery-power traction unit, was originally a diesel-electric metro vehicle for urban service. It began its life running on polluting fossil fuel, but it was destined for greater things.
The conversion involved replacing a diesel engine with six lithium-ion traction batteries, each with 84 kilowatt-hour capacity charges. These obtained their electricity via a 3.5 minute rapid fast-charge system, ideal for a stop-start service according to Rolling Stock World.
The first UK battery-power train was ready for action after a year of trials. This was a defining moment for environmentally-friendly passenger-rail traffic in the United Kingdom. We watched and waited for the next step to unfold.
Metro Battery Power Goes Live in East London
The prototype battery-power commuter train was up and running by February 6, 2026. It was delivering a full passenger service along a 2.5-mile line, and rapid fast-charging at either end in 3.5 minutes.
This arrangement is working well for residents of Eealing and Greenford in West London, England. The 3.5 minute pauses allow time for passengers to disembark and new customers to board. So all is looking good for this bold experiment.
Great Western Railways told Rolling Stock World how this step could lead to the withdrawal of a further 80 diesel trains in United Kingdom. This should contribute to cleaner air along 1,800 miles of railway lines.
