The Great Western Railway company in England dates back to 1833, when steam engineers were learning to conquer distances. The company still exists, although nowadays it is experimenting with renewable energy instead of diesel. A press release of February 14, 2024 announced a new Great Western Railway battery train distance record.
The New Great Western Railway Battery Train Record
The company’s ‘FastCharge’ battery train prototype traveled 70 miles between depots, while using just 45% of its battery power. There was no need to recharge along the way, hinting at a total battery range of 120 miles.
“We were delighted by how the battery train performed today, and during its series of test runs,” a spokesperson said. “In fact, it’s fair to say it has surpassed the expectations of our team of engineers.”
The Deeper Significance Of This Achievement
The new Great Western Railway battery train distance-record gives fresh hope to a dream frustrated so often in the past. Extended battery train operation previously foundered under battery range limitations. There would be real savings if we could do away with expensive hot rails and overhead electric wires.

The Great Western ‘FastCharge’ battery system opens new doors to battery-only trains, able to meet demanding consumer-driven timetables. If the company were to achieve this goal, then its believes it could meet the U.K. Government’s target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The Great Western Railway Battery ‘FastCharge’ System
The Great Western Railway ‘FastCharge’ System uses 2,400kW charging equipment, completing recharges in three and a half minutes. This makes its prototype battery system compatible with quick turnaround requirements of timetable services.
“Only now has there been this combination of battery capability and charging technology,” says Engineering Director Simon Green. “One that enables a branch-line train to operate to the same timetable as a diesel unit. And yet still be able to charge safely, and with minimal impact on the local grid power supply.”
