Climate Change Part 28: 2007 When Al Gore Pleaded for Vision

Al Gore served as Bill Clinton’s vice-president from 1993 to 2001. And he came close to beating George Bush to the White House in December of 2000 after receiving 500,000 more votes. He said, “For the sake of our unity as a people and the strength of our democracy, I offer my concession.” He was a visionary ahead of his time.

How Al Gore Gradually Diverged from Mainstream American Opinion

Gore used to toe the popular line after the Twin Towers atrocity. Because he strongly advised against plans to invade Iraq. After the president was slow in responding to Hurricane Katrina, Al Gore chartered two planes to rescue survivors. However, Al Gore’s passion was increasingly countering climate change, as opposed to achieving pure political power.

He chaired the first U.S. congressional hearings on climate change back in 1976, where he warned of toxic waste and global warming. Moreover, in 1990 Al Gore chaired a three-day international conference hoping to create a Global Marshall Plan. “Under which industrial nations would help less developed countries grow economically while still protecting the environment.”

When Al Gore and the IPCC Received the Nobel Peace Prize

After striving for America to face climate realities by signing the Kyoto protocol, Gore retired from the public eye to write his book, ‘An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power’ concerning his mission to fight climate change. For this and other efforts he received the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the International Panel for Climate Change in 2007. The citation read:

“For their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change. And to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change”.

“I am deeply honored,” he replied, promising to hand the entire proceeds to the Alliance for Climate Protection. “We face a true planetary emergency,” he warned. “The climate crisis is not a political issue. It is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level.”

I tripped over a shrinking bank balance and fell into the writing gig unintentionally. This was after I escaped the corporate world and searched in vain for ways to become rich on the internet by doing nothing. Despite the fact that writing is no recipe for wealth, I rather enjoy it. I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
